SPORT

Sport plays a vital role at our School, which has a long tradition dating back to 1892, of providing a variety of opportunities for students. The school maintains high participation rates in both community and competitive sports, underlining the importance of sport in nurturing athletes with motivation, training, and the ability to balance academics.

Engagement in sport is not only beneficial for physical health but also contributes to greater confidence, resilience, self-esteem, and the ability to focus and achieve goals. Teamwork, making friends, competing, celebrating victories, and handling defeats gracefully are also key aspects of the sporting experience at the school. Research further supports the positive correlation between youth sport participation and educational success.

The School emphasises inclusivity, giving every student, regardless of skill level, the chance to partake in and be challenged by a diverse array of sports. Students are encouraged to choose sports thoughtfully, taking into account overlapping seasons, and are expected to commit fully to their selected activities by attending all practices and matches.

Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School is proudly affiliated with the Queensland Girls' Secondary Schools Sporting Association (QGSSSA), a prominent advocate for young women in sports.

Ipswich Junior Grammar School is a member of both the Britton Shield (Years 2 to 6) and Queensland Girls Primary Independent Schools' Andrews Cup (Years 2 to 6) Competitions, opening doors for both boys and girls to compete in various sports throughout the school year.

Co-curricular Sport

Ipswich Junior Grammar School is a part of the Andrews Cup and Britton Shield competitions, allowing our boys and girls to participate in interschool competition, in both individual and team sports throughout the school year.

Ipswich Girls' Grammar School is a member of the Queensland Girls' Secondary Schools Sporting Association (QGSSSA). The Queensland Girls' Secondary Schools Sporting Association aims to be the leading secondary schoolgirls sports association and a passionate promoter and advocate for young women in sports. The Association provides a suite of innovative, high-quality sports programs for students in member schools and encourages participation and elite performances in respectful, safe and healthy environments.

Once nominations have closed, students at Ipswich Girls' Grammar School will be required to attend compulsory trials. To ensure that all girls are given equal opportunity, in most instances, at least two trials will take place. Teams will be selected by a panel of coaches and/or teachers with knowledge of that sport.

At Junior Grammar, our representative teams comprise eligible students based on age or year level, depending on the sporting event or competition entered by the school. During trials, consideration is given to students displaying:

  • Strong skills and ability
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Cooperation, a positive attitude, and a willingness to improve
  • Commitment to training
